Secretary General Mr. Adrian Albu took part in High Level
Virtual Conference of the BSEC Member States “The intensification
of regional cooperation for the implementation of the Sustainable
Development Goals” held
on 10 November, 2020
Mr.
Albu moderated the session on sustainable transport and connectivity
in the context of COVID-19. Key speakers were represented by Ms.
Natia Tsikaradze, National Coordinator/Policy Adviser, Policy
Planning Unit SDGs from Administration of the Government of Georgia,
Mr. Emil Majidov, Adviser to the Minister of Economy of Republic of
Azerbaijan, Ms. Tatyana Teplova and Mr. Edwin Lau from OECD, France
as well as Prof. Nicolaos Theodossiou, Chair of the Black Sea
Sustainable Development Solutions Network – SDSN Black Sea from
Hellenic Republic.
The session was focused on the critical role of infrastructure for the Sustainable Development Goals. The meeting attendees highlighted that infrastructure systems form the backbone of every society, providing essential services that include energy, water, waste management, transport and telecommunications.
Also, infrastructure plays a key role in all three dimensions of sustainable development: the economy, the environment and society.
And sustainable transportation system is one that:
• allows the basic access needs of individuals and societies to be met safely and in a manner consistent with human and ecosystem health, and with equity within and between generations;
• is affordable, operates efficiently, offers choice of transport mode, and supports economy;
• limit emissions and waste within the planet’s ability to absorb them, minimizes consumption of non-renewable resources to the sustainable yield level, reuses and recycles its components, and minimizes the use of land and the production of noise. Sustainable transport supports inclusive growth, job creation, poverty reduction, access to markets, the empowerment of women and the well-being of persons with disabilities and other vulnerable groups. It is also essential to fight climate change, reduce air pollution and improve road safety.
