Regional and sectoral alliances call on governments to take urgent and coordinated action to cope with the consequences of the pandemic

A meeting of the Secretary Generals of IRU, TRACECA, BSEC, ECO and Turkic Council, was held online on 15 March 2021.


The meeting was organized by International Road Transport Union. The atendees discussed the impact of Covid-19 pandemic on global and regional level and a big damage on road transport sector as well as actions for recovery as proposed by IRU.


Secretary Generals expressed their deep concern due to the influence of the Covid-19 panpemic on health of people and economies of countries.


«Unilateral decisionds and lack of coordination were understandable at the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic, but are completely unacceptable one year later», - BSEC Secretary General Mr. Michael Christides said.


The leaders of the largest Eurasian regional bodies issued a joint statement calling for urgent and coordinated government action.


In their joint statement, they urged governments to take coordinated action to mitigate the impact of the pandemic by providing targeted financial support to road transport operators, harmonizing border crossing procedures, encouraging digital trade facilitation tools such as eTIR and e-CMR and improve coordination.


Joint call of 5 esteemed international organizations on governments is designed to immediately draw attention to the situation and take action, supporting the sector in this hard times.


Mr. Umberto de Pretto, IRU Secretary General, mandated Mr. Adrian Albu, IRU General Delegate, to be the IRU focal point to ensure the follow-up with BSEC recpective teams.
